Chapter Five

This was what he’d been waiting for.

Nick sprawled on his back on the bed, Evangeline overtop of him, sweat and heat sealing them together.

He wasn’t a saint. He’d dated. He’d had sex. He’d had lots of sex. But what had just transpired between him and this woman he’d known for one day?

It had filled him up, chased away that loneliness that had been dogging him. He’d just left her, and he already wanted to sink inside of her again, to fill himself up with whatever it was that made her shine.

Too bad he could already see the wheels in her head turning.

“I could lose my job for this.” Her voice was quiet, but to his relief, there was no regret in it.

“What we do behind closed doors is nobody’s business but our own.” Nick propped himself up on one elbow, looking down at her. Sex had made a mess of her long, honey colored hair, and he reached out to stroke a hand through it.

“I know that.” She ducked away from his hand, and he felt a weight start to settle on his chest. “I do know that, but the rest of the football world doesn’t.”

“Fuck the football world.” Nick’s forehead creased into a frown as she tugged the sheet from the bed around her body, then slid from the mattress. “Who cares what teams we’re loyal to? What the fuck does it matter?”

“We’re rivals, Nick.” His words had upset her, he could see it in her face. “We both know it’s ridiculous. But I’ve worked too hard too hard to lose my place in the organization. And we both know that the old boys’ club won’t tolerate my involvement with a member of the rival team.”

“Then maybe you shouldn’t be working for them.” Nick didn’t have a hot temper, but anger was slowly, steadily working its way in.

This was about more than sex. Way more. And this fool woman just wanted to throw it away.

Turning, she stared at him, incredulous. “Did you just suggest that I quit my job for you?”

Danger, Will Robinson. Dangerous female ahead.

“That’s not what I meant at all.” Swinging his legs over the side of the bed, he stood, not bothering to cover himself. He didn’t miss the way her gaze flicked down to his crotch and then back. “I mean, why would you work for an organization that makes you deny yourself of something that you want? Something that could be really, really good?”

For a moment Evan looked taken aback, and Nick thought he might be making some headway. But then she planted her hands on her hips and lifted her chin in the air.

“That’s easy enough for you to say. You’re coming from an entirely different side of things.” He opened his mouth to argue, but she held up her hand to stop him and steamrollered right on through. “You’re a football player. I know as well as anyone how hard you guys work, but you also get some pretty awesome perks to go along with it.
